BigEye is an allegorical, 11 thoughtful and humorous look at the wonder and meaning of life.
BigEye an ever questioning philosphical creature, carries Margaret and Pete the worms in a Bryant and May matchbox. With the help of Rubbed out and Rocket the dogs and a menopausal scientist MRS GREN, they all embark on a remarkable journey.
Climbing mountains, touching the stars, metaphorical and real, and exploring everything from the logical to the heartfelt, on a wonderful quest for meaning.

THE OPENING OF BIGEYE

EXT. SOMEWHERE IN LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND, UK – DAYBIGEYE NARATION

blink, black, blink black, velvet darkness. nothing. blink orange, blink red, then warm and wind brushes up against my skin, fiery crimson lids, veins. White. Gasp. beat, beat, beat and der dum, der dum. Air rushes into my nose, my mouth. A clean crisp bite breath lingers long enough for me to swallow it in. Blink, white, blink white. Birds. The earth underneath me. clouds, sky, trees, wind in the trees, black skeleton trees, sun white backlight, little ant, sand in the soil, moss, grass, birds, scratchy meadow pipets dipping by.
The earth was warm, the grass free, the air clean and full of hope, I stepped across an old wooden foot worn bridge. The dark brown sounds of my little feet where comfortable and wholesome and timeless. A comforting thud, echoing the time held in the rough sawn weather beaten boards. The sun settled on my face and filled my head with freedom light. phhhaaaaaa(breathe in noise), fwwhhhoooooo(breathe out noise)My feet carried me across the bridge, across the shining brook and onto a lush tufty brae and up, to the open, open expanse beyond.
The screen is filled with abstracted images relating to the narration, there are some interactive elements to reveal layered images, and toggle the narration and text on and off. Nature sounds and music.
When time to read/listen/see images passes we are visually guided to scroll down.

EXCEPT FROM FIRST SCENE THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED

EXT. SOMEWHERE IN LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND, UK (CONTINUED)

We see BigEye for the first time as an animated illustration. We hear BigEyes’s voice but also see the text as a speech bubble.
BIG EYE
What is this, what is all this. Who am I.

BIGEYE NARATION
A rollie just misses my head and then a workies’ boot. and a creak, schwack slam echoes and bounces across the land(as he shuts the door). His smokers cough merges and breathes life into the starting engine of his digger. It starts carving the land and slicing through the verdant turf like a piece of piss.

There are 2 worms in the soil. Pete and Margaret.

PETE
HELP, SQUOOSE ME MATE, CAN YOU HELP.
BIGEYE NARATION
That was the first time I saw Pete and Margaret.

SUPERMARKET SWEEP SCENE – WE MEET THE DOGS

BIGEYE NARATION
Meanwhile in a supermarket skip 1/3 of a mile away on the outskirts of a bland northern English town.
In the skip are Rocket and Rubbed Out the dogs.

ROCKET
There’s loads of stuff in here Rubbed out (all echoey)

RUBBED OUT
Hurry up Rocket, please..

ROCKET
Just keep an eye out, Rubbed Out, don’t be soft…Ha, Amazing, I’ve got you sausages!!

Rubbed Out looks apprehensive and a bit worried by the thought of sausages.

RUBBED OUT
But Rocket, I don’t…

RUBBED OUT
(under his breath) I don’t eat meat (beat)
RUBBED OUT
Want to seem ungrateful (still out of Rockets earshot)

ROCKET
MEGA!!

ROCKET
Don’t worry (with a poppy eye pretend patronising expression)they’re veggie.

Me, T-Bone steak, thank you, yes I think so, t bone steak, looking good

A security guard comes and nearly catches them

ROCKET
Wa whoa, didn’t yer know that food distribution is all messed up.

SECURITY GUARD
Get OUT you little shits, fucks sake, go on, oh its all fuckin all over the place now, fucks sake.

BIGEYE NARATION
The security guard takes a massive swing of a kick at Rocket who is grabbing one last thing, and just misses her.

whilst barley dodging the Security guards boot.
ROCKET
Capitalism, well neo liberalism actually, means that global food distribution is all messed up, thousands of tonnes go to waste while some starve

SECURITY GUARD
Go On Piss off

ROCKET
(whilst panting) So really, I’m really good, me. I’m addressing the balance, creating harmony..

Rubbed Out is panting and running and looking at Rocket wide eyed

ROCKET
Isn’t it though?, aren’t I, That’s what we’re doing.

BIGEYE NARATION

They grow closer to the countryside in one of those places that are neither rural or urban, an edge place

we see Pete,Margaret and Big Eye in the distance.

… Snoring, wind and flames flicker and the fire silhouettes the group on the horizon.
CUT TO:

The group are walking across a misty horizon at sunrise. The sun on the horizon transitions from the fire to the sun and the silhouettes are now walking along.

Some of my favourite stories combined great imagery or illustration, with music and storyline that left me with ‘a feeling’.

Something more than the words, in fact sometimes I don’t remember the words or even the plot of a story but remember an atmosphere or sense of the story that has left its mark.

From Winnie The Pooh with Shepard’s illustration to  Roald Dahl stories with Quentin Blake’s vibrant illustration and then later The Moomins with its evocative music and illustration, I moved on to graphic novels such as Maus, Persepolis, Palestine by Jo Sacco and Jimmy Corrigan

Interactive web narrative has the scope to appeal to immerse the viewer even further. Looks and styles I have considered for BigEye are The Boat, I love the use of view, movement and interactivity in this, it has been carried out in a sophisticated way, not a clunky click on the link for more info way. [/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section bg_color=”hsl(210, 2%, 78%)” parallax=”false” separator_top_type=”none” separator_top_height=”50px” separator_top_angle_point=”50″ separator_bottom_type=”none” separator_bottom_height=”50px” separator_bottom_angle_point=”50″ style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;border-style: solid;border-width: 1px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_custom_headline level=”h2″ looks_like=”h3″ accent=”false” class=”cs-ta-center” style=”color: hsl(0, 0%, 100%);”]EXCEPTS FROM CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN SCENE[/x_custom_headline][cs_text class=”cs-ta-center”]

EXT. CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN – DAY

BIGEYE NARATION

A screaming silent print, the first in the snow. My little feet hardly leave a mark on the mountain. I let the cool air fill my lungs and watch it wisp up the top of the snow. This is it now, this mountain holds our destiny. We’ll climb the blueprint and it will become clear.

Up we climb, up always up, climbing into our dreams. Up the contours, up the fingerprint, up the hill print.

MARGARET

I’m so cold Pete, I can’t go on. You go on without me.

PETE

Margaret don’t be so dramatic. And I can’t go without you, we’re in the matchbox together.

EXT. CLIMBEVERY MOUNTAIN (Cont)

BIGEYE NARATION

On our way down Rubbed Out is unconsolable and lost and fragile, sometimes almost disappearing. The wind and the whipping snow obscuring Rubbed Out from view. Just the gentle sobs carrying across the mountain like a broken sparrow. Rocket is closer she is tied to Rubbed Out, pulling him along but the chord is wearing thin and even Rocket looks tired, so tired.

I feel so guilty for taking them here. To the top of the world and the bottom of our hopes.

Finally the chord brakes and Rocket collapses. Rubbed Out spins away, a mark, a dot, a spec… and we all stand silent staring into the immense white nothing, into the white noise. Rubbed Out is gone.

EXERPT FROM MICROCOSMOS SCENE[/x_custom_headline][cs_text class=”cs-ta-center”]All the group of travellers are just starring wide eyed at Mrs G, very tired. Rocket is nodding off.

MRS GREN

Right!

she bangs her fist on the table and jolts Rocket awake.

enough of this, LETS EAT. A salty broth like the primordial soup we all came from, yes?

Rockets eyes light up. And they all start to eat the soup.

MRS GREN
Proffesor margulis said” We land animals all derive ultimately from our aquatic ancestors.. no animal has ever really completely left the watery microcosm… The concentration of salts in both seawater and blood …
as she pricks her finger with a pin and licks the blood blob that rises to the suface.

…Are for all practical puposes identical. The proportion of sodium, potassium and chloride in our tissues are intriguingly similar to those of the worldwide ocean. No matter how high and dry the mountain top…
As she stands on a chair

no matter how secluded and modern the retreat, we sweat and cry what is basically sea water.

BIGEYE NARATION

I had a big tear in my eye, we all did. It fell down my face and onto my lips and the salty taste made my heart ache.

ROCKET

have you got any bread mrs G

RUBBED OUT
please

MRS GREN
yes Rocket there you go.

Then Mrs G starts sweating and fanning herself.

ROCKET
whats wrong Mrs G

MRS GREN
Oh nothing Rocket its just the change

ROCKET
whats that mrs G.

MRS GREN
The menopause, they call it the change of Life.

BIG EYE
that sounds important

Bit about menopause

ROCKET
does that mean you are dying?

MRS GREN

well yes I suppose that part of me is dying yes, that bit is dying. But, at the same time, new worlds and new feelings are coming alive, I’m evolving into a new creature, a new animal.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section bg_color=”hsl(210, 2%, 78%)” parallax=”false” separator_top_type=”none” separator_top_height=”50px” separator_top_angle_point=”50″ separator_bottom_type=”none” separator_bottom_height=”50px” separator_bottom_angle_point=”50″ style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;border-style: solid;border-width: 1px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_custom_headline level=”h2″ looks_like=”h3″ accent=”false” class=”cs-ta-center” style=”color: hsl(0, 0%, 100%);”]EXCEPT FROM THE SEA SCENE[/x_custom_headline][cs_text class=”cs-ta-center”]

EXT. THE SEA – DAY

BIG EYE

On the open waves, water, water and salt, salt and water, like blood sweat and tears, water and salt, salt and water.

The waves eroding time and crashing onto our destinies, splashing up against our souls. The Sea,the old Sea. Salty water sinking into our skin, making its mark.

Washing away our what was. Biting into our time with a thirst, an inevitable evenness. Like liquid history. But with each new wave, time, time, time a vast ocean of what’s next.

PETE

We all came from the Sea

ROCKET

And before that the stars
